Snubber Circuit

Engineering
A protective component that prevents dangerous voltage spikes when the magnetic field switches on or off. Without it, the coil can produce voltage spikes that damage the electronics or create unwanted electromagnetic interference. Typically a resistor-capacitor combination or transient-suppression diode placed across the switching device or coil.
