Inductive Kickback

A voltage spike that occurs when current through the coil is suddenly interrupted. The collapsing magnetic field generates a brief but very high voltage in the opposite direction. This is both useful (it creates the sharp pulse edge that stimulates tissue) and dangerous (it can damage electronics without proper protection). The spike magnitude depends on how quickly current is interrupted and the coil's inductance.
